The main application of multi-speed motors is in drives with centrifugal load characteristics - such as fans. Multi-speed engines can be used in systems where sudden changes in rotational speed are allowed. Multi-speed motors can be either single-winding, where the speed ratio is 2: 1, or double-winding, where the speed ratio may be other than 2: 1.
Multi-speed electric motors for industial fans (W) are specially adapted to drive devices with fan characteristics. The power of these motors increases to the square of the increase in rotational speed, while the torque changes linearly with speed. These motors are used in devices with fan characteristics, such as axial fans and centrifugal pumps.
